Apple Vision Pro users can now enjoy immersive VR gaming experiences with the launch of X-Plane 12 and iRacing, two popular PC VR simulators, on the Apple Vision Pro. This development leverages Apple's innovative foveated streaming feature, which maximizes visual quality by focusing on the area of the display you're currently looking at. While Nvidia's CloudXR SDK is a key component, it's important to note that the visionOS client apps connect to your local gaming PC for rendering, not the cloud.
The introduction of these streaming clients offers a simplified launch process, seamlessly integrating physical accessories like racing wheels with passthrough. iRacing's client automatically tracks and segments your racing wheel, while X-Plane allows manual passthrough cutout customization. Both apps are free on the visionOS App Store, but you'll need the corresponding PC software to connect.
However, there's a tradeoff: Nvidia's CloudXR SDK exclusivity to RTX 40-series and 50-series graphics cards means that users with older GPUs may be left out. This exclusivity is also present in the X-Plane and iRacing implementations. Despite this, the dedicated streaming clients provide a streamlined experience, making VR gaming on Apple Vision Pro more accessible.
The competition in the VR streaming space is heating up, with tools like Clear XR and KRVR offering foveated streaming support for various PC VR libraries. While dedicated clients for X-Plane and iRacing offer simplicity, the broader ecosystem is expanding, providing users with more options to enjoy VR gaming on Apple Vision Pro.
