In a surprising twist of events, Sophie Grégoire Trudeau, the former spouse of Justin Trudeau, recently shared her thoughts about experiencing a rather solitary Valentine's Day while her ex-husband enjoys a blossoming romance with pop superstar Katy Perry.
"I'll be honest; being single at 50 on such a love-centric day isn't exactly my idea of bliss," Sophie candidly expressed in her latest newsletter titled "Closer Together."
For many people navigating midlife alone, February can be a particularly loud reminder of their status, and Sophie pointed out that this shouldn't be perceived as a mark of failure. Instead, she proposes that it often represents a pivotal moment for self-reflection. "It's a time to quiet the external noise and reconnect with our inner voice," she elaborated.
The couple announced their separation after nearly two decades of marriage in August 2023, marking a significant life transition for both. Following their split, Sophie has since begun a relationship with Dr. Marcos Bettolli, a pediatric surgeon based in Ottawa. However, their relationship faced scrutiny, as Bettolli’s estranged wife filed a divorce petition claiming her husband had entered into a partnership with a high-profile individual, raising concerns for their children's safety due to the media attention surrounding them. Ultimately, Sophie and Bettolli's relationship also came to an end.
"For countless individuals, navigating life post-separation can be quite complex," Sophie acknowledged in her newsletter. "Society often teaches us—whether gently or harshly—that we need to mold our bodies and emotions to fit in and find acceptance. After years of adapting ourselves, our minds can become conditioned to a state of constant vigilance rather than feeling at ease."
She emphasized that achieving self-love involves recognizing our defense mechanisms and the habits we develop to cope with life's challenges. "Self-love is an ongoing journey that centers around creating a sense of safety within ourselves, which ultimately stems from being present in the moment."
As Sophie reflects on love and personal growth, her ex-husband appears to have moved on quite smoothly, forming a seemingly strong relationship with Katy Perry, 41. The pair first sparked dating rumors last July, and they have been spotted together frequently, showcasing a visible bond. Notably, Perry surprised attendees at the recent World Economic Forum in Davos by accompanying Justin, adding a touch of glamour to the event.
Around the same time the dating rumors surfaced, Katy also ended her engagement with actor Orlando Bloom, a change she reportedly did not anticipate. Their public debut as a couple occurred during her 41st birthday celebration in Paris, shortly after they were seen enjoying a romantic outing on a boat.
On the podcast "Arlene is Alone," Sophie was asked how she felt about Justin's new relationship with Katy. She responded thoughtfully, stating, "I recognize that much of what is publicly discussed can be triggering. How I choose to handle those feelings is entirely up to me. I have the authority to decide who I want to become through this experience."
Sophie did not shy away from acknowledging her emotions, saying, "Just because I manage my reactions doesn’t mean I don’t feel deeply. I am very sensitive, after all! But I maintain control over how I respond to those emotions."
Moreover, Sophie praised Justin’s commitment to their three children—Xavier, 18, Ella-Grace, 17, and Hadrien, 11—highlighting that she does not consider herself a single mom. "I share a strong partnership with a father who truly loves and dedicates himself to our kids," she noted, emphasizing the importance of co-parenting.
In December, Sophie made a guest appearance on the holiday episode of the French-Canadian version of The Masked Singer, known as Chanteurs Masqués. During the show, she performed the classic 1956 song "I Put a Spell On You" alongside a contemporary piece by Quebec artist Charlotte Cardin, where she poignantly sang the lyrics, "Everything I love, I break." This moment illustrated her ability to embrace her artistic side even amid personal changes.
