Born in Sherbrooke, Quebec, on January 7, 1946, Gilles' early life took him to Ontario as his father pursued a career in logging. This early experience likely instilled in him a strong work ethic and appreciation for the outdoors that would define much of his life. He was a man of the land, a man who could build and create with his own two hands.
Gilles' life was profoundly shaped by his 59-year marriage to Judi, his high school sweetheart. Theirs was a partnership many could only dream of – a testament to true love, built on a foundation of unwavering friendship, shared laughter, and an enduring devotion. They weren't just husband and wife; they were best friends, partners in adventure, and each other's biggest supporters. They embraced life together, finding joy in simple moments and creating a lifetime of cherished memories. Above all, he loved her immensely, and the strength of this love permeated everything he did.
As a father to Michael (Renee) and Steven (Paula), Gilles was a guiding force, instilling in them values of respect, hard work, and integrity. He held high expectations, believing in their potential and pushing them to become the best versions of themselves. But here's where it gets controversial... some might say his expectations were too high. But those who knew him understood that beneath his sometimes serious demeanor lay a warm heart, a quick wit, and an unconditional love for his family. His guidance shaped not only their childhoods but also the men they became.
Gilles reveled in his role as "Grampa" to Marc, Gabrielle (Andrew), Sydney, and Joshua (Julia). He was their biggest fan, always present at their games, recitals, meets, and matches. Grampa was the first to hear about every exciting story, every daring adventure, every hard-earned triumph. He imparted invaluable life lessons: the importance of strength and determination, the power of loving deeply and wholeheartedly, the significance of living with integrity, and the necessity of doing the right thing, even when it's difficult. And this is the part most people miss... it wasn't just about telling them these things; he showed them through his own actions.
Gilles was predeceased by his parents, Leo Georges and Rose Aimee (Bisson) Rouleau. He is lovingly remembered by his siblings: the late Renaud; Nicole (Rick) Howe; Alain (Val); the late Daniel (Cindy); and Lynne. He was also predeceased by his in-laws, Jim and Marie Murphy, and late brothers-in-law Jim (the late Shirley), John and Michael Murphy. Gilles leaves behind a legacy of love, cherished by numerous nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews, and cousins.
A man of remarkable talent and skill, Gilles possessed a unique ability to work with both steel and wood. In 1985, he co-founded Ro-Von Steel Limited, a venture that showcased his entrepreneurial spirit and expertise. He later ventured out on his own, building a reputation for dedication, skill, and unwavering commitment to quality. He retired in 2006, deeply proud of the business he built and the legacy he created.
But his greatest achievement in retirement was arguably the "Iron Maiden," a tugboat-style trawler designed and fabricated entirely by Gilles himself, from start to finish, using steel. This ambitious project, which began in 2007 and culminated in its launch in 2012, stands as a testament to his craftsmanship, perseverance, and visionary spirit. Gilles and Judi spent ten unforgettable years aboard the Iron Maiden at A-Dock in the Bellevue Marina, creating countless cherished memories together. Imagine the stories that boat could tell!
Alongside Judi and their many dear friends, Gilles embraced travel and adventure. Their journeys spanned coast to coast across Canada, Alaska, Mexico, and California with Mariette and Fidele; explorations of Europe and Florida with Al, Val, Dan, and Cindy; boating adventures with Brian and Leona; concert outings with Susan and John; and relaxing getaways in Phoenix with Betty and Arnold. These travels were filled with laughter, friendship, and a shared passion for discovering new places and experiences. It's clear Gilles valued connection and creating lasting memories with those he loved.
At home, Gilles found contentment in the simple things: spending time by the wood stove in his garage, engaging in friendly cribbage matches with Guy and Marilyn, savoring a Manhattan or a shot of brandy, and always being ready to lend a helping hand to a neighbor, whether it was snowblowing a driveway or offering assistance with a project. His diverse interests included hunting, fishing, boating, enthusiastically cheering on the Montreal Canadiens, and spending time at camp up north, particularly at Achigan Lake, which he shared with his brothers. It sounds like he truly appreciated the beauty of nature and the camaraderie of good company.
Gilles was, above all, a devoted family man. His legacy of pride, love, leadership, and hard work will continue to inspire and impact the lives of all who knew him. His memory will live on in the hearts of his family and friends forever.

In accordance with the family's wishes, a memorial mass will be held by Father Rex Lumine at St. Gerard Majella (211 Pentagon Blvd.) on Thursday, January 15, 2026, at 1:00 p.m., followed by committal at Holy Sepulchre — Columbarium. A come-and-go celebration of life in Gilles’ honor will take place from 4:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. at the Grand Gardens (1324 Great Northern Rd.).
In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests memorial donations (made payable by cheque) to the Sault Area Hospital Foundation Cardiology Unit or Cancer Clinic (750 Great Northern Rd., Sault Ste. Marie, Ont., P6B 0A8). These donations would be a meaningful way to honor Gilles' memory and support causes close to his heart.
