Five years ago, a bold vision for the future of space exploration was set in motion with the signing of the Artemis Accords. Today, as we celebrate this milestone, three new nations—Hungary, Malaysia, and the Philippines—have joined the ranks, bringing the total number of signatories to an impressive 59. But here's where it gets even more exciting: this growing coalition is committed to ensuring that space remains a realm of peaceful and responsible exploration, even as some actors seek to militarize it. Is this the foundation for a new Golden Age of space discovery?
"The addition of these nations strengthens our global resolve to explore space responsibly," remarked Sean Duffy, acting NASA Administrator. "Their commitment to transparency, safety, and peace in space is a powerful statement at a time when the final frontier faces unprecedented challenges. Together, we’re not just exploring space—we’re building a legacy."
And this is the part most people miss: Both Malaysia and the Philippines signed the Accords during President Trump’s visit to Kuala Lumpur for the Association of Southeast Asian Nations Summit, with the White House announcing the signings on October 26. Meanwhile, Hungary’s Foreign Minister Péter Szijjártó signed the Accords on October 22 during an official visit to Washington, just ahead of President Trump’s meeting with Prime Minister Viktor Orbán. This move came just three months after Hungarian astronaut Tibor Kapu made history by launching into space aboard a SpaceX Dragon spacecraft as part of the NASA-supported Axiom Mission 4 crew. Kapu spent two weeks on the International Space Station, conducting scientific research and outreach alongside NASA astronauts.
Since their inception on October 13, 2020, the Artemis Accords have evolved from a small group of eight founding nations into a robust international coalition. In 2025 alone, seven countries joined, reflecting a surging global commitment to a safe, peaceful, and prosperous future in space. But here’s the controversial part: As more nations sign on, questions arise about how to balance national interests with collective responsibilities in space. How do we ensure that the principles of the Accords are upheld by all, especially in an era of increasing space competition?
In September, NASA co-chaired the Artemis Accords Principals’ Meeting in Sydney alongside the space agencies of Australia and the United Arab Emirates. This gathering brought together dozens of signatory nations to discuss critical issues like non-interference in space activities, orbital debris mitigation, system interoperability, and the release of scientific data. Here’s where it gets thought-provoking: Should the sharing of scientific data be mandatory, or should it remain voluntary? How can we ensure transparency without compromising national security interests?
At the meeting, NASA pledged to host a workshop in 2026 focused on transparency and data sharing among signatories. The agency has also taken steps to release more information about lunar missions, promoting openness and preventing harmful interference. This progress is vital for the sustainable exploration of the Moon, Mars, and beyond. For instance, following a call to signatories, four CubeSats from South Korea, Saudi Arabia, Argentina, and Germany will fly aboard Artemis II, showcasing international collaboration in action.
