Alia's uncle, veteran producer Mukesh Bhatt, has stepped forward to defend his niece and the Jigra team. In an interview with Lehren Retro, Mukesh, who previously collaborated with Divya on Savi, suggested that Divya's claims were a mere publicity stunt. He highlighted that Jigra's inspiration actually came from Mahesh Bhatt's 1993 film Gumrah, which had a similar premise to Bangkok Hilton. Mukesh clarified, "I think that film was the inspiration behind Jigra."
He continued, "Creating controversy is a way to gain media attention. Everyone needs publicity, and sometimes, controversy is the path to that."
Mukesh strongly defended Alia, stating, "Alia Bhatt is a huge star. When you involve a bigger name, controversy is inevitable. But Alia doesn't need to resort to such tactics. She's intelligent, level-headed, and grounded. She wouldn't stoop to such levels. I can vouch for that. Alia is above this. She doesn't need to engage in such cheap tactics."
Divya Khosla's Allegations: A Case of Copying?
Divya publicly accused Jigra of copying Savi's jailbreak storyline, claiming her film had explored the concept first. She also alleged that Jigra's makers were inflating box office numbers, sharing evidence of an empty theater and suggesting bulk ticket purchases to fake collections.
Savi, starring Harshvardhan Rane and Anil Kapoor, reimagines the classic tale of Savitri and Satyavan, focusing on a housewife's mission to free her husband from a UK prison. Jigra, on the other hand, tells the story of a brother-sister duo, with the sister (played by Vedang Raina) aiming to rescue her brother from prison.
