In 2025, Disney's box office success was a testament to the power of well-loved intellectual properties (IP). With blue aliens, superhero families, and talking animals, Disney topped the domestic box office charts, raking in an impressive $2.49 billion in ticket sales. This was no small feat, considering the competition from Warner Bros. Discovery and Universal, who also had a strong showing.
But here's where it gets controversial... Disney's success wasn't just about having popular IP; it was about having multiple successful sub-brands under its umbrella. Paul Dergarabedian, an expert at Comscore, highlighted this advantage, stating that Disney, Warner Bros., and Universal dominate the market by controlling a significant portion of it with their diverse and distinct labels.
And this is the part most people miss: Disney's 2025 success was built on already established franchises. Four of their films made it to the top 10 highest-grossing releases, including remakes and sequels like "Lilo & Stitch" and "Zootopia."
"Most years, the box office is dominated by known IP and non-original content," Dergarabedian explained. "These films have an inherent advantage due to their brand recognition, which can significantly impact marketing and potential success."
In fact, nine out of the top 10 movies at the domestic box office were based on existing IP, with Warner Bros.' "Sinners" being the only original title to break through.
So, what does this mean for 2026? Well, get ready for even more sequels and familiar IP. Dergarabedian predicts that 2026 will surpass 2025 in terms of high-profile sequels and established franchises.
And Disney is leading the charge. They're set to release their first Star Wars film since 2019, titled "The Mandalorian and Grogu," based on the popular characters from their Disney+ series. Additionally, "Toy Story 5" and a live-action "Moana" are on the way, followed by the highly anticipated "Avengers: Doomsday."
But it's not just Disney; other studios are also bringing their A-game. Warner Bros. is releasing "Supergirl" and "Dune: Part Three," while Universal has "Minions 3" and "The Super Mario Galaxy Movie" in the works. Lionsgate is set to release "Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping," and Sony is bringing us another "Jumanji" film.
Shawn Robbins, director of analytics at Fandango and founder of Box Office Theory, is optimistic about 2026. He believes the slate is packed with top-tier franchises, ranging from fan-driven to family-oriented, alongside filmmaker-driven tentpoles.
"As we look ahead to 2026, there's a lot to be excited about," Robbins said. "We can expect a diverse range of films, from horror and comedy to indie and other genres, with some strong performers and potential surprises."
